An overlooked gem in the FMP catalog, this confusingly titled album features saxophonist Lol Coxhill, guitarist Mike Cooper, and pianist David Holland who's not to be confused with the bassist who shares his name. It's a jaunty and folk-tinged excursion into the rondo form, full of gorgeous melodies, playful interactions, and unbridled improvisations. Sample a tune - we predict you'll be hooked!

"If anyone is the minstrel of free music, it is soprano saxophonist Lol Coxhill, whose long-running interest in folk melodies, pure corn and monstrously creative free improvisation blends to create a unique sound and sensibility. The Johnny Rondo Duo is his co-op with pianist David Holland. The Johnny Rondo Duo plus Mike Cooper (the later a free-oriented guitarist) is a very enjoyable collection of Rondo standards and free improvisations. Holland plays nice formal folkish stylings on the Rondo tunes, but he is also an attractive free pianist. Cooper mainly runs creative interference with various sounds and noises. Coxhill is excellent throughout, playing those quirky melodic lines with a totally unique tone that makes him one of the most distinctive soprano saxophonists on the planet." -- Cadence

"Beautiful and uncompromising music." -- Jazz Podium
