    .
DIGITALLY REMASTERED. Two albums in one -- featuring two different approaches and musical personalities, cellist Tristan Honsinger and bassist Maarten van Regteren Altena. Side A features Honsinger at his most unfettered and unpredictable, unleashing startlingly fluid cello lines alongside whoops and hollers. Side B showcases Altena's more percussive, jabbing, and patient approach -- though he's not above a cheeky duet with a metronome!

REVIEWS

"Tristan’s side is extremely natural. He must surely be one of the freest of players. Each of his pieces flows superbly without the slightest hint of self-consciousness or recourse to stylistic clichés. Maarten prefers small, tight, abrupt sounds - 'the short dancing drumming attack of people like Pops Foster or Wilbur Ware' - though there’s obviously much more that he can do. On 'Allegretto Balinoso' he plays a very nifty duet with a metronome, perhaps just to silence those bores who insist that free players can’t 'swing.'" -- Melody Maker

"Honsinger combines a lively technique accompanied by his vocals and coughing and a bit of slapstick." -- Cadence

"For all of these players, their work on these LPs is likely their best on record. Heard together, their approaches indicate the current level of technical/aesthetic achievement for the bass and related string instruments. Especially recommended ...[is] the Altena/Honsinger LP (SAJ-10)." -- Henry Kuntz, BELLS
