DIGITALLY REMASTERED. An extremely rare album from underrated American pianist and composer Michael Smith. He spent years honing his "Geomusic" system, which generated rich instant compositions that drew on both jazz and classical vocabularies. Overlooked upon release, it's easier now to hear how these tunes crackle with an ever-shifting sense of drama, tension, and off-kilter beauty.

REVIEWS

"'Austin Stream' is a recording of pianist Michael Smith’s quartet recorded at Berlin’s Total Music Meeting in Nov. 1976. 'In Search of a Mind' is a slow ballad with some sensitive floating, improvised development between Smith and Bernard. Carter’s bass is very strong with some very effective holding of bended notes between sax rests on 'Ballad for K.' On 'Geomusic 616,' a piece dedicated to Monk, the music attains its highest level of free passion and energy." - Cadence

"Michael Smith has lived for over two years in an abandoned school in the small Swedish town of Kivik, but he's maintained close contact with French and American composer colleagues. Smith calls his music "Geomusic," a fruitful symbiosis of composed and improvised music that fills the vacuum that still exists between jazz and classical. This can be easily heard in these pieces because his process is transparent, whether the economical 'In Search of a Mind,' or rapid 'Ballad for 'K'.' It's remarkable how this quartet generates suspense and dramatic possibilities." - Werner Panke
