This duo between little-known vocalist Uschi Brüning and veteran saxophonist Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky has been overlooked in the FMP catalog. Their tightly constructed tunes confidently veer between traditional jazz singing and screaming extremes a la Linda Sharrock, sometimes in the same song. An intriguing item, punctuated by Petrowski's all instrumental interludes.

REVIEWS

"This session is pervaded by the sense of veteran contemporary/free jazzer Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky leading Uschi Brüning, who appears to have a formal classical background as well as jazz experience, into more open realms. Brüning, who possesses a fine set of pipes, executes both expansive lyrical material and up tempo intricate heads with finesse. Her strongest soloing extends itself from these landmarks. For his part, Petrowsky plays authoritatively whether singing through the lovely Ornette Coleman melodies sprinkled throughout the program, or suddenly breaking into untrammeled free music diatribes. The program cuts a nice path through various orientations from jazz to folk to classical to open forms, with structural and improvised change-ups adding an edge of unpredictability to the recital. If Brüning continues to know and respect her limitations, while continuing to challenge them, she could become a vital force in contemporary voice."
