As opening salvos go, this one ranks pretty high. The first release from an incendiary all-world quartet billing themselves as Die Like a Dog, this record stuns at first listen, and retains its ability to fascinate even after prolonged exposure. Taking inspiration from the "music, life and death of Albert Ayler,' these four masters use Ayler's themes and approach as cues to create a new sonic world, located somewhere between Miles' spacey 70s excursions and Ayler's own fire music. Essential, for fans of any/all of these musicians.

REVIEWS

"This disc doesn’t wear down with repeated listens. In fact it just gets better and better. Not that it won’t knock your socks off on the first listen – it will. Highly recommended."—Cadence

"However ‘free’ things get there’s sense of direction to the music which never compromises its emotional energy. Recorded live, the quartet’s Albert-tinted improvising is mixed with brief quotes from Ayler compositions. Brötzmann plays with burning intensity... while Kondo is consistently on the case, at times working with a Don Cherry-like discretion, but more often as an assertive counterpart to Brötzmann. His electronic treatments of his trumpet are consistently challenging, picking up where Miles left off in 75."—The Wire

"If it’s the art of the quartet you’re looking for then please seek and find Die Like A Dog from Peter Brötzmann, Toshinori Kondo, William Parker and Hamid Drake. Subtitled “fragments of music, life and death of Albert Ayler” this live recording represents a toughness and sincerity that too rarely lives this large."—CODA magazine

",,,music that is alternately moving, invigorating, and astonishing."—AMG

"...anyone who feels they have enough Brötzmann in their shelves doesn't without Die Like A Dog in hand."—Clifford Allen, All About Jazz
