We admit that we generally couldn't care less about bagpipes, but Paul Dunmall's playing is nothing short of a revelation. In his hands, it recalls various non-western instruments and conjures up entrancing drones and spiraling patterns. This session with bassist John Edwards and saxophone colossus John Butcher is a tremendous showcase for his unique talents - and a spellbinding soundworld in its own right. Highly recommended.

4 Stars - All Music Guide

"Dream dates come and go and most of them are usually disappointing when compared to the promises they held on paper. Such is not the case with Hit and Run." - All Music Guide

"A captivating disk." -- CODA

"There are outstanding interactions, quick changes in tempo and some attractively mellifluous sections. All three tracks [tracks 2-5 considered as one suite, 'Rhymes'] have their high points, and stand alone as significant pieces of music....The Dunmall duo is important for his bagpipe work, which if you have never heard it before, is revelatory."
-- Cadence

"Some of the most accomplished reedists on the planet. Dunmall often suggests such non-Western instruments as the shenai and the musette in his playing, creating two melodies at once, the first with the chanter and the second with the drone. Questions sometime arise as to whether a sound originates from this distinctive pipe command or from Edwards' percussive playing." - Jazzword

Paul Dunmall: border and northumberland bagpipes, soprano saxophone [tracks 1 and 6]
John Edwards: double bass [all tracks]
John Butcher: soprano & tenor saxophone [tracks 2-5]
