DIGITALLY REMASTERED. This rare quartet date offers yet another facet of Peter Brötzmann's music, showcasing him in a relatively straight ahead context which evokes Ornette Coleman's classic band of the '60s. There are sweet playful melodies, intertwined rhythms, and terrific horn playing courtesy of Manfred Schoof. Pure pleasure.

REVIEWS

"Manfred Schoof leads an excellent quartet through 'In A State Of Undress.' The operative reference here is the Ornette Coleman quartet, circa 1965-1970. Schoof, with errant hero Peter Brötzmann on alto saxophone, bassist Jay Oliver and drummer Willi Kellers, play at an effervescent pulse, with Schoof and Brötzmann taking off together on sweet, playful melodies independent of the rhythm. Every shot here is a great one." --Ben Ratliff, CODA

"The concluding title piece sounds remarkably like a lost late-'60s Ornette Coleman piece, with Schoof firmly in the Don Cherry pocket and the rhythm team pulling off a fine Izenzon/Moffett imitation. Arguably the 'straightest' date in Brötzmann's discography, 'In a State of Undress' is also a solid, enjoyable session on its own." -- Brian Olewnick, AMG

"Brötzmann respectfully lets guest trumpeter Manfred Schoof set the tone. The latter draws lengthy melancholy lines over conventional rhythm settings, the players ready to burst restraints whenever they receive the cue. Upon Brötzmann’s entry the quartet fires all its engines, grandstanding wildly until Schoof restores some sense of decorum, in so doing forcing a brief, lovely, yearning duet (at the tail end of “Certainly”) when Brötzmann alternately rasps at the underside of, and intertwines with, one of the trumpeter’s moody trajectories." -- The Wire
