REVIEWS

"Wow. A free improvisation session filled with energy, sparks, and inspiration. I really like German sax player Stefan Keune, whom I first heard in a duo with guitarist John Russell. Here, he is in a trio with bassist Hans Schneider and drummer Achim Krämer. This group has already released at least one very good CD (The Long and The Short of It), but I think this one is even stronger. Keune is not a high-energy player; his style comes closer to a sonic experimentation that proceeds from the inner self to the outer world. Yet, this trio kicks a**!"- Francois Couture, Monsieur Délire

"In the best European free improv tradition of in-the-moment intensity and dialogue, this trio with Stefan Keune on alto and baritone saxophones, Hans Schneider on bass, and Achim Krämer on drums, drive the concept on with maximum power and focus. All three musicians create together, quite egalitarian, on the spot. They investigate sound and timbre and how subtle nuances in pressure and interaction can change the color of the piece, add new dimensions. Over the eleven tracks, the lightness and raw immediacy is upheld. Despite the lack of phrases, or melodious fluidity, the music still manages to create a linear movement with peaks and moments of increased intensity. This will not be for everyone's ears, but will please fans of Evan Parker and John Butcher."

"The newly reactivated FMP label has made some very strong contributions of late, and this trio date is among them. It conjures memories of the label’s late 1960 glory days, replete with all the timbral intrigue, spatial shifts and fire that made FMP releases the innovative historical documents they were. Despite the fact that this is a trio, the size of the group is never overly apparent. In “Handpicked”, to cite only one example, we could be listening to a quintet or sextet, so complete is each musician’s handling of register and timbre."
- Cadence Magazine

"This is a good record of rather unhinged and high-octane improvisation, made interesting by the fact that the trio’s sonic particles retain individuality rather than gobbing together."
- Clifford Allen, Ni Kantu

"On "No Comment", a trio of German improvisers presents what's best about truly free racket. The ensemble runs the gamut from way-out-there free improv to more subdued tinkering. The further one gets into this session, the more appreciation one has for the tight interaction of all members of the trio. Their ultimate gift is their ability to listen to one another.
