Lawrence Stanley & Hope Carr I bought this album on vinyl sometime in mid 1977. It's one among many classics from the early FMP catalog. The music runs the gamut: complex interweavings and fleeting, instant compositions, abstraction, humor (e.g., the false starts and stops of "Das ist doch einfach genug"), musical quotation (hear Han call out "Salt Peanuts" early on in his drum solo on the title track), gorgeous melody ("Schoener geht's nimmer"), a little circus music, and controlled chaos. Favorite track: Schöner geht's nimmer.

Recorded a month after Outspan No 1, this album offers up four more sonic delights from the core trio of Brötzmann, Van Hove, and Bennink. Rarely has free jazz/Euro improv/circus music/[your identifier here] sounded so unfettered and delightful -- adventurous without seeming self-serious, silly yet not without gravity. A must for any fan of these three maestros.

REVIEWS

"They are very good at juxtaposition and counterpoint - always throwing each other curves and integrating them into successful improvisations." -- Milo Fine, Sweet Potato

"This is music that is absolutely full of humor, but without a compromise in the level of musicianship. In fact, the humor - the musicians’ utter refusal to take what they are doing too seriously - is the most refreshing aspect of the recording.... The music has a bright carnival atmosphere about it (it’s a very live recording), and it features everything from Van Hove chasing after villains in top hats to the band’s brief irreverent homage to the German polka. This is a true performer’s art...thoroughly enjoyable and perhaps fully as important in its own way (and certainly every bit as ambitious) as the group’s earlier releases." -- Henry Kuntz, BELLS

Peter Brötzmann: alto & tenor saxophone, clarinet
Fred Van Hove: piano
