The debut release from COWWS Quintett showcases their playful sound combinations, such as waltzes featuring twanging spaghetti western guitar. Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson guests, adding skittering beats that hot-wire a number of the tunes. But the general mood of this criminally overlooked album is stately and melancholy. In a word, lovely.

REVIEWS

"This album shows how varied improvised music can be. Melancholy and confidence permeates the pieces with varying weight, often enriched with a portion of humor. New intricate paths of composition and improvisation are rhythmically interlaced. On some pieces, a drum machine has a powerful effect, with rattling repressiveness and danceable slantiness fed by Mayo Thompson, who even does some singing."
