In August 1979, East German musicians were invited to perform a three-day festival in West Berlin. Billed as "Jazz Now," this landmark meeting was recorded and initially released by FMP as a limited run of 800 two-LP sets, along with a 48-page booklet. Unavailable in any way since that initial stock ran out, here at last is a digital edition of both the music and the book, twenty-five years after it all first appeared.
    .
Does it makes sense to say here is the who's who of East German jazz? Well, that's what you'll find here. From stunning duos to challenging small-group performances, from large rave-ups to Mingus nods (the bass player passed away earlier in 1979), "Snapshot" provides much more than that name suggests. It's as complete a portrait of jazz in the GDR as you're ever likely to find, and a moment in time that continues to reverberate -- via these sounds -- today.
    .
The download INCLUDES A PDF OF THE 48-PAGE BOOKLET.

REVIEWS

"There are only a few recordings as well produced, and justifying their own claim to document things to such a high degree as 'Snapshot'. Nearly the whole spectrum of what one has got accustomed to calling GDR-Jazz, is represented with characteristic recordings. ....'Snapshot' is a 'Must' for everybody seriously involved with free improvised music." --Thomas Fitterling, Jazz Podium

"West Berlin’s Free Music Production has come out with this double-album and 48-page booklet. The music was recorded at the concert series 'Jazz Now – Jazz aus der DDR', which presented all the major G.D.R. musicians and groups, with the exception of trombonist Conrad Bauer, who was taking part at the time in Stockholm’s Ad Lib ’79. The accompanying booklet offers a long overdue theoretical and analytical view of New Jazz and/or improvised music in the G.D.R., with articles by Wilhelm Liefland, Martin Linzer, Rolf Reichelt, Hans Rempel and Jürgen Engelhardt. With over 60 photos and biographies-discographies of all the musicians on the records, the publication enhances what is the most ambitious project yet documenting the contemporary G.D.R. jazz scene." --Jazz Podium
