John Cratchley If I had to choose one word to describe the wonderous German FMP label (for which Destination Out is the BC outlet) it would be uncompromising.
You will find music here fom the late 20th Century I suspect no one else would have documented with such dedication. Great artists of European and American Free Jazz and Improvisation; Iconoclasts of integrity and monumental spirit...FMP recordings used to be hard to find (mail order was the method) but no longer!!
Peter Brotzmann is synonymous with the label and,I think, one of the most important Contemporary Artists in any field. He is demanding and generally takes no prisoners (musically speaking) but richly rewarding for the open, receptive and adventurous listener. This album isn't as coruscating as some of his output,so a great place to start opening your ears and rebutting slavish convention.

REVIEWS

"For those who find Brötzmann’s balls-to-the-wall blowing rather wearying, Songlines should be a welcome change-up. Brötzmann is one of those Euro free improvisers who reject the jazz label - and swing is decidedly not his thing - but his all-American rhythm section brings out his bluesy and melodic side and Coltrane roots, all to the good. FMP’s a free-music label, but Ali and Hopkins play very much in the jazz tradition, the bassist even picking a folky, frankly Charlie Haden-y solo on “Two Birds in a Feather.” This is Brötzmann for folks who don’t like Brötzmann – and for those who do." -- Kevin Whitehead, Pulse!

"... a pleasing alternative to the often documented crash-and-burn side of Brötzmann’s work." -- Richard Cook, The Wire

"There are six compositions on this record; it comes off as a very intense, extremely quiet kind of blowing gig, where this trio were looking to discover things about each other and the music they were making. As a result, it is one of the finest performances issued from that festival, and a landmark in Brötzmann's career in particular." -- Thom Jurek, AMG (4½ stars)
