We know Ekkehard Jost primarily as the author of Free Jazz, a key text covering the history of the music. Here he puts down his pen, stepping bravely onto the bandstand to put his reed where his mouth is as part of a sextet that performs three Jost compositions, and two of his arrangements. The band harvests early ESP sides for sonic inspiration, injecting history and Euro-style fervor into these freebop anthems.

REVIEWS

"Free Jazz author Ekkehard Jost wrote me in advance of a recording he’s on, and this is it. He plays a convincing baritone and some alto in a sextet, composed three song-like works and arranged the other two. His “Segeln in der Wetterau” is a humorous line where an unaccompanied alto stretch follows Michael Schläper’s frenzied soprano. Trombonist Wenzel Sadlo will, with Mangelsdorff and Rutherford, be a musician to acknowledge for Europe’s extension of the trombone’s language. Manfred Becker has an interesting accordion outing on “So oder so, die Erde wird rot.” A noticeable folksong quality prevails that contributes to this music’s success, as the musicians are capable in the improvised idiom that draws on their own resources. Highly accessible music with thematic variety and big ensemble sound." - The Grackle
